Catalyst – A New Program for Launching Your Career on Our Equities Team

Jan 05, 2026

In 2026, we’re opening applications for Catalyst, a new program for early-career talent in Equities. The Catalyst program will take graduating students through an internship and 9-month rotational program before placing them on Equities teams.
We sat down with Will Scott, who manages the Catalyst program, and Hannah Dinardo, Head of Campus Recruiting, for a Q&A about the program.

What is the Catalyst program?
Hannah:

Catalyst is a training and development program designed for students who want to launch their careers as Equities Analysts at BAM. The program combines foundational training in accounting, modeling, and research with deep dives into major sectors, hands-on project work, and rotations on Portfolio Manager (PM) teams. Our goal is to provide a practical pathway from a summer internship to a full-time Associate role on an investment team.

How is this different from other buy-side analyst programs?
Will:

Catalyst centers on a hands-on curriculum and its integration with BAM’s investment teams. Unlike many programs, Catalyst offers direct work with PMs, early exposure to sector specialization, and practical work with AI and data tools. The program is designed to ensure a seamless transition to full-time roles.

How long does the program run?
Will:

The Catalyst program begins with a 10-week summer internship where candidates will gain practical skills and PM team exposure. Following graduation, participants will join a 9-month program designed to launch their careers on the Balyasny Equities team. It begins with foundational training and sector immersion, followed by two one-month rotations on PM teams. After successful completion, participants are placed full-time on a team as Associates.

Who should apply?
Hannah:

We’re looking for individuals pursuing or holding a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Mathematics, or a related field, graduating between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028. Ideal candidates have strong analytical and financial modeling skills, a demonstrated interest in financial markets, and effective communication abilities. If you’re passionate about public equities and ready for a demanding, structured program, Catalyst could be a great fit.

What qualities or skills do you look for in Catalyst candidates, beyond academic achievement?
Hannah:

Beyond academics, we value intellectual curiosity, logical thinking, resilience, initiative, and strong communication skills. We look for candidates who are quick learners, organized, and able to work well in teams. Experience with equity research or market analysis is a plus, but we’re equally interested in your creativity and ability to solve problems.

What are some of the skills that participants will learn?
Will:

Participants will build a strong foundation in accounting, financial modeling, AI investment applications, and company analysis. The curriculum includes sector deep-dives (TMT, Industrials, Consumer, Financials, Healthcare), advanced investment analysis, and practical experience through team rotations. You’ll also develop soft skills like critical thinking and project management.

What regions should apply?
Hannah:

Catalyst applications are open internationally. All international participants will spend the first three months in New York for foundational training. After that, some may return to international offices for the advanced curriculum. We encourage applicants from all regions to apply.

What advice would you give to students considering applying to the Catalyst Program?
Hannah:

Be ready to demonstrate your technical skills. If you can, get involved in your school’s investment clubs, pursue internships, and take on projects that show your passion for equities. Most importantly, be authentic about your interest in public markets and your readiness for a challenging, hands-on program.

Will:

I’d add, take the time to prepare for interviews. We’re looking for candidates who can think critically and show a genuine interest in investing. Use every opportunity, like internships, coursework, and clubs, to build your skills and network.
