From Intern to Portfolio Manager

Jun 18, 2026

Troy Gao first joined Balyasny as an intern in the summer of 2017. Nearly a decade later, he now manages a portfolio in our Systematic business. We spoke to Troy about what drew him to finance, how he developed his skills through our Quant Anthem Program, and his advice for incoming interns at BAM.

A new approach

Growing up, Troy was drawn to math and knew early on that finance was where he wanted to focus. "I was always very interested in investment," he says.

Having secured an internship at Balyasny, he focused on opportunities to apply his skills to real-world problems. Troy and his team were among the first to experiment with quantamental and systematic trading at BAM.

"The most exciting part of being a quant is actually seeing these data patterns working out and the entire system, infrastructure, and process working in harmony."

-Troy G., Portfolio Manager

The Quant Anthem Program

An important part of Troy’s pathway to becoming a PM was developing his skills through Balyasny’s Quant Anthem Program. Quant Anthem gives experienced quant investors the platform, infrastructure, and mentorship needed to scale into successful PMs.

Advice for Today’s Interns

Now mentoring interns of his own, Troy's guidance is to focus on getting things done and not be afraid to push the perspectives of your team. The best work, he believes, comes from those willing to go beyond what's asked of them.
